Rush racks top spot

After each KU basketball game this season, this is where you can find out the hardwood equivalent of The Nielsen Ratings from Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan. He'll rate the Jayhawk scholarship players' individual performances, telling you who was worth tuning in to watch. If you agree or maybe even differ, make sure to comment and tell Tom how you really feel. (Scoring: Each week, the top player in the ratings will be awarded 10 points. Second best gets nine points. Third best gets eight points, and so on and so on. The season standings are at the bottom)

1. Brandon Rush: Used his left hand to drive down the middle of the lane and put up a left-handed layup and had a spectacular up-and-under move for another bucket. Wasn’t hitting from the outside so he aggressively took it to the hoop and finished with a game-high 25 points.

2. Cole Aldrich: Most of his eight points, seven boards and four blocked shots came in a spectacular first half. Got too fancy on a dunk attempt and missed, but what a performance from the freshman who has the potential to develop into one of the nation’s top big men.

3. Sherron Collins: Steered the team so well down the stretch and hit such a big three to push the lead back to eight points that his seven turnovers can be overlooked.

4. Russell Robinson: Outplayed Ty Lawson and had four assists, three steals and just one turnover.

5. Darnell Jackson: Wanted the ball down the stretch, got it, and put it off the glass for big buckets in the waning moments.

6. Mario Chalmers: Had 11 points, four boards, three assists and three steals.

7. Darrell Arthur: Did a terrific job of grabbing rebounds in traffic and finished with nine boards (all defensive) and four blocked shots.

8. Sasha Kaun: Did excellent defensive work on Tyler Hansbrough during his 10 minutes on the floor.

9. Jeremy Case: Played a minute.

10. Tyrel Reed: Checked in at the end.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings (based on average points)

1. Mario Chalmers 7.58 (288 points, 38 games)

2. Darnell Jackson 7.20 (281 points, 39 games)

3. Brandon Rush 7.03 (260 points, 37 games)

4. Darrell Arthur 6.51 (254 point, 39 games)

5. Russell Robinson 6.42 (251 points, 39 games)

6. Sherron Collins 5.84 (195 points, 33 games)

7. Sasha Kaun 5.44 (219 points, 39 games)

8. Cole Aldrich 3.95 (154 points, 39 games)

9. Rod Stewart 3.36 (111 points, 33 games)

10. Tyrel Reed 2.74 (63 points, 23 games)

This one was essentially impossible to rank these guys. Sherron deserves to be high, but he also had those 7 turnovers (something that's scary now facing Memphis). Russell didn't have the offensive numbers but was huge when the fouls were building and we needed a solid, patient leader on the floor. Shady had a phenomenal start to the game - scoring on turn arounds, getting a huge block early that set up Brandon on the break, playing good, non-fouling defense. Mario is Mario. Probably can't take Brandon off 1 or Cole off of 2, but the rest of the guys could be mixed up.

I have to rank this as a team effort with Rush leading the way. That power dunk by Kaun seemed to demoralize the Tar Heels. Defense seemed to be the main difference between the two teams. Mario's steal in the first part of the game was very telling. It became apparent from the beginning as Arthur scored low that Carolina wasn't going to be able handle our strength on the inside. It's really difficult to rate this game since there were so many outstanding performances. I'm glad it's not my job.

Also, maybe we need to put Stewart in here as well since his inspiration from the bench was so beneficial. What a guy! How easy it would be to just sit around and feel sorry for oneself, but he comes and remains a major part of the game. He found a way to contribute even though he couldn't get on the floor.

Sheron had his worst game all season. Watch from 6:30 in the first half to about 10:00 in the second. That's the worst basketball he's played all season. At one point, all he did was dribble the ball in a circle. He was god awful. I blame him for us losing the lead. I remember one point, seeing Collins screw up, and Russell was over on the sideline, telling him to "use his head".

My order:

Rush
Aldrich
Robinson
Chalmers
Jackson
Kaun
Collins

One of the announcers, referring to Cole Aldrich, said, "Wow. You're watching the future of Kansas basketball right now." We have nothing to worry about.
