Dugan Arnett’s KU football notebook

Quigley working at linebacker

The Kansas University football team’s current season might still be three weeks from completion, but that hasn’t stopped coaches from looking ahead to 2009.

In preparation for a possible position change heading into next year, junior running back Angus Quigley — the team’s second-leading rusher in ’08 — has spent considerable time working at linebacker.

“He’s built like a linebacker,” said senior linebacker Joe Mortensen on Wednesday. “You guys have seen what he can do when he lowers his head and he runs and he hits people. I don’t know if (the position switch) is for sure — they still have him taking reps at running back — but coaches are experimenting with it.”

Quigley emerged this season as the team’s top running back early on, cracking the starting lineup against Sam Houston State and Iowa State and finishing the regular season with 309 yards and three touchdowns to go along with a team-best 5.2 yards-per-carry average.

However, the eventual emergence of fellow-back Jake Sharp, along with a pair of fumbles against Texas, limited Quigley’s snaps down the stretch.

The potential switch to linebacker, presumably, is a way for Kansas coaches to get the physically-imposing Quigley on the field more often, and Mortensen is doing nothing to dissuade his teammate from considering a switch to the defensive side of the ball.

“He’s got the nastiness about him,” said Mortensen, one of three starting linebackers that will graduate following this season. “I told him it’s fun, and I definitely think he can play linebacker.”

UM’s Decker two-sport athlete

Given his multi-faceted dedication to Minnesota University athletics, it would be hard to argue that Gophers standout receiver Eric Decker’s contributions to the school have come up short.

In addition to earning first-team all-Big Ten honors as a receiver this season, Decker is also a starter in left field for the Gophers’ baseball team, batting .329 with 11 doubles, four triples and three home runs last spring.

“He’s like a Bo Jackson, huh?” said Mortensen, told of Decker’s two-sport exploits. “Watching him on film, he can definitely make plays. He’s a great receiver, and it will be a great challenge for our defense to stop him.”

Of course, as KU junior cornerback Justin Thornton pointed out, a baseball skill set likely won’t do much good during the teams’ Insight Bowl matchup Dec. 31.

“Playing two sports at the Division I level takes incredible talent and time; it's definitely great that he's able to do that,” said Thornton, who also considered running track in college. “But I don't think his baseball skills are going to help him in this game.”

Reesing not ready to evaluate season

Although the Kansas football team’s regular season concluded nearly two weeks ago with a victory over Missouri, quarterback Todd Reesing said he hasn’t yet gone back to evaluate his performance in 2008.

“I don’t worry too much about looking back or saying this or that happened, because it’s in the past,” said Reesing, who was left off the all-Big 12 team this year after earning second-team honors in 2007. “There’s not much you can do about it now. The only thing you can do is learn from it and watch the games that you did play and take away things from it.

“At this point, we’re looking towards the bowl game and just trying to improve ourselves and get better and look forward to a chance to get an eighth win.”

About three months ago, I came on this board and asked Coach Mangino to move Angus Quigley to DE. I got the idea after watching Henry Melton (who was a Texas RB until this year when he moved to DT) destroy people.Never thought about a move to LB, but I guess that would work too! Good luck Angus!

I remember that, Rivet.....good call. We still need speed at DE. I think our DTs would have looked a little better if we had ends that could get up field and shrink the pocket.2009 will be the first season in quite a while where we go into the season concerned about our linebackers. Man, we've had a pretty good run of 5 or 6 years at linebacker. Too bad Mortensen and Rivera had their speed taken away by injuries. Can you imagine if they had been healthy? Holt was always the forgotten man, but he had a great year.

Not just the DTs, but our entire secondary would have looked better if we had better speed around the outside. That's not a cut at the commitment or effort of this year's DEs. But just imagine if Charlton Keith were on this year's team.

I wonder how Angus feels about this switch. Reminiscent of Adrian Jones' switch from TE to tackle before his senior season. Speaking of which, a little research brought up an interesting photo from the archives:http://www2.kusports.com/photos/2006/aug/17/104798/Not to mix sports and politics, but certainly interesting.

I remember those comments as well.Good call Rivet.I will be anxious to see that nastiness in Anguschristopher Quigley that Mortensen was talking about.

Geez, we need all the help we can get on defense next year. We've got a ton of talent on offense, the only thing that will stop us from an amazing season is our D.

I like the way Mangino finds and experiments with kids in various positions. Meyer at WR, Patterson at CB and now Angus at LB. A rivals 3 star at one position maybe a 4 star at another.

I still think Angus is our best running back. I wish he didn't fumble the ball so much.He would probably make a good linebacker. I'm not worried about the linebacker position next year. Either Joe or Mike said the linebackers that have been backing them up are bigger, better and faster than they are.

I think Arist Wright can make a good replacement for Holt. They are similarly gifted athletes.Justin Springer should actually be a step up in talent from Mortensen (and that is saying something). The third starting spot will probably go to Dakota Lewis. He's not the most physically gifted athlete on the team, but he plays with more heart than just about anybody. That could be a decent starting corps with plenty of depth nipping at their heels.

I like what you say burtin, except Lewis. What makes you think he plays with the most heart on the team? He only plays sparingly on S.T.'s so it would probably be hard to judge that. I like, and think it'll be Wright, and Springer for sure. Then I like Schermer, unless Quigley works out. I think you'll see Dudley with some time, Ogontodu, and maybe a juco or something. Most likely though, we'll only have two backers in there most of the time, at least we should being that we'll be facing spreads all the time.

I hope Springer is OK. I think he had a season-ending knee injury playing special teams. I would not count on him though--and I hope I am wrong.

Beat the d___ tiger lilies and corndogs all of the time. Beat em and Beak em. Make em rue the day... any day and every day. Take no prisoners... they smell bad.I want double defense to smite these cads. And I hope the stupid misery team keeps wearing those revolting urine yellow jerseys.Crappy new year to them. And for good measure, get the bball team on the improvement overdrive we know is going to happen with experience, and whip em good on the court. That should tide them over.
