Former Kansas basketball assistant Sam Miranda died Thursday in Lawrence. He was 78.
Miranda was the assistant coach in charge of recruiting for KU from 1964-76. During his 13 years coaching under Ted Owens, KU won the Big 8 conference five times and also reached the Final Four in 1971 and 1974.
Miranda played collegiately at Indiana, where he earned second-team Big Ten honors in 1951. He also was selected to tour with the College All-Americans and the Harlem Globetrotters in 1952.
He was inducted as a player into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1973.

Coach Sam was a great recruiter and more importantly an estimed resident of Lawrence. He loved this place and may he RIP!
