I cannot express how happy I am that it is finally basketball season!
Lets get right into it. We had a game last night against Fort Hays State and we did win big. Now I said before the game that we shouldn't look too much into how our bigs play because Fort Hays State did not have anything really for bigs. I think that our bigs did look solid tonight but they should have. I was more interested in our guard play and I must say that I was rather impressed with a couple and disappointed in a couple.
First of all what I liked about Sherron was that he started slow but took the game over when he needed to and I loved that he was able to pick and choose which possession he would score on. Sherron ended up having a very good game and I liked what I saw for the most part. With EJ I was very impressed with his athleticism. What an incredible athlete and he showed that he can play ball. Yes he made some mistakes but man is he explosive or what?
Xavier Henry was very impressive to me. He may have the best looking shot in the country and not to mention hes left handed. He is big and strong and explosive. And yes, he can play defense. I was glad that Self got him out of the game because there was no need to play him and risk injury in that game.
With Tyrel Reed I was not impressed. I thought he was out of sink the entire game and I didnt think he looked smooth at all in that game. I wish we had Brady to fill in for him but since we dont we need Reed to step up and start playing ball.
With Tyshawn I was disappointed in the first half but was happy to see him rebound in the second half. I think he didnt start because of the fights and I think he will definitely be starting when the season starts. Needs to work on his shot but he was impressive in the second half.
Overall I was impressed but we have a ton to work on before we talk any further about 40-0. Yes I do think this team has the talent to go 40-0. One thing that concerned me a bit was meaningless and just silly turnovers. I want this team to take care of the ball and cherish each possession and if they do that they wont lose a game.
The last thing that concerned me was the lack of defense. I know that it was just one game but Fort Hays State should not have scored 68 points on us. I know that Self will get this cleared up and I think we have the best coach in the country to get our defense pumping. I think this team can get a ton of steals but I would like them to defend the shot a little bit better.

I was not impressed with the perimeter defense. And I question whether this team has anyone who can really guard it up on the perimeter like a Russell Robinson or Mario Chalmers. Morningstar is probably the closest thing this team has to someone like that and he won't be smelling the floor until January.
I was impressed with Sherron and how he let the game come to him. He didn't seem to force anything, which he definitely did at times last season.
Xavier absolutely tried to force the issue on more than a few occasions. However, I suppose that is to be expected from a freshman when playing under the bright lights of Allen.
