At the end of this season we need to fire our offensive and defensive coordinators. It's the perfect time to do so because we will have a new type of QB next season and we lose a couple of leaders on our defense next season. We also lose a couple WRs, assuming Briscoe is gone.

We need to bring in two guys that have been successful at running an offense and running a defense. A guy like Bill Young. I feel like our defense has some talent this season but we just don't use it.

We all know that our offense should be really good but yet we have started out the last three games incredibly slow. And once our team gets down we have no chance of winning because our defense can't stop anybody when we need them to. Yes they held ISU at the end of the game but not at Colorado. And our defense started out OK against OU but then they let OU score a ton.

I will not watch another game until at least Bowen is gone. That guy has the worst defensive schemes that I have ever seen. I don't want to watch a team catch pass after pass after pass all over our defense unless we are going after the ball. We need turnovers to win games!

Look, if a team is going to score on us anyways why not go after the ball? I would rather the other team score from us missing an interception than let them catch every ball and then tackle the receiver.

And for the love of God can we open up the offensive playbook at the beginning of the game rather than when we are down by 14 points? Our offense is at its best when we throw all over the field and that way the pass opens up the run.

Mangino, get rid of these clowns.

i think you are right with Bowen. He's not getting it done, ideas are beautiful but what he's got is not working.

As for The O, Maybe we just need to rescheme. Frankly, big O is not a slasher.... He's a dump truck with a 5th gear. I see him working in a more run friendly offense. Our Line should be good, I think Dex at this point has cost hismelf the nfl draft. We definetely need to see Kale Pick some before we stick him out there nex year,.... Hopefully that will be against Texas after they have put us away.... Hopefully he throws as well as he runs....

So, based Offense 3 receiver and 1 TE with Opurum.... we won't need to use the shotgun exclusively because Pick can see over our lineman from under center..... and We should have at least 2 outside receivers capable of making plays ( wilson if his hands develop, briscoe if he has the humility to realize he's not there yet, and MacDougald barring a transfer..... )

I think Warriner starts every game the same way...we run the ball 3 times in a row and then pass 3 times in a row. Mix it up! I also hate seeing an injured Sharp running through the middle of the line. We have a huge RB that should be used up the middle.

I think this is the perfect time to fire Warriner because we will have a new QB and more than likely we will need a new system. I think Briscoe is gone mostly because he struggles with academics and I just dont see him coming back. He will probably be a second round guy IMO. I don't see Macdougald transferring because he and Wilson will probably be the guys next season at WR.

We need to pick up a small RB to mix it up with Opurum and it's not Rell Lewis.

We may have landed a solid LB yesterday but he may not be ready for two years. We need a better LB to come in and make an impact next season. Our DBs have to get better at getting turnovers.

When I look at our offense I see the potential for them to actaully be good next year. They will have a pretty good offensive line, at least one nice RB, good WRs, a good TE, and I think Pick will be solid at QB.

What's nice is KU has some good WRs coming in next year. I like Ricki Herod's speed and quickness, he has the potential to be a big time deep threat for us. And Keeston Terry is a nice route runner to have.

Yes. Let's fire the most productive offensive coordinator this program has ever seen...

Please. Give me a break. It's not time to hit the panic button just yet--it's not like Oklahoma has a push-over defense. It held Texas to, what, 16 points?

You could argue that Ed Wariner has had as much to do with KU's recent success as Mangino or Todd Reesing.

Now, I am still yet to be sold on Clint Bowen. I do know that the defense has lacked an all Big-12 quality lineman since James McClinton left and an all big-12 quality cornerback since Aqib Talib departed. I am willing to give Bowen at least one more year to get something to work.

I think the biggest mistake that programs make is firing personnel at the first hint of failure. Let us not forget that this IS the university of Kansas and that KU is not QUITE a program that consistently competes for Big 12 championships and BCS bids. We're going to have our bumps in the road.

I agree that the offense decision making is questionable. All last year it made me crazy. We would have success doing one thing on one drive but never see it again the rest of the game. Shovel pass every third down and long. It was sickening how predictable it was.

I do not think that firing Warinner is a very good idea at all. That just makes no sense. The man is brilliant, our execution has been a little sloppy the last couple games but Warinner is a great coach, and I don't think we could find anybody that could replace him.

Bowen is a little sketchy though, but Young wasn't that great until his very last year with us. He benefited from having great LBs every year and still had a few rough years. I think Bowen still needs more experience, and could probably use some help. But he does not need to be fired. That just wouldn't help this team.

Ed Warriner is THE reason that this team has put up HUGE numbers. He gets the ball into his playmaker's hands.
We need to remember that there are smart coaches on every team that KU plays. They have realized that the "Reesing Scramble" is a play where receivers have assigned areas to go to. Their D-backs are now staying in coverage. In addition, the underneath throw w/ a stacked formation and the shuttle-pass to Sharp have become signature plays. Teams are taking these away (as evidenced by the pick-6 vs OU) and forcing KU to beat them with other plays they may not be as comfortable with.
Ed Warriner knows this, but players have to execute and Reesing needs time to throw. Adjustments are being made, which is why Pick came in for a series. This blew up in our face because KU was out-athleted by OU. There is no shame in this, especially for a growing program.
Ed Warriner is not the problem. He will make necessary changes. He will remain our O.C. The talent level will continue to increase. KU Football will continue to grow.

txrockchalk,

I said I wouldn't watch a team that had Bowen as defensive coordinator and Warriner as offensive coordinator.

Look Im not the only one who thinks that Warriner is not doing his job. This team has so much talent but yet we find a way to dig ourselves in a whole almost every week. Yeah we put up some HUGE numbers against OU right? wrong.

I want an offense that is so potent that it can score on any defense and it is very obvious that we cannot. I dont care that you all think that we shouldn't fire Warriner because he is the most sucessful OC we have had. Do you know KU football? Is it really that impressive that he is the most successful OC that we have had? not to me.

Slow starts have killed this team and the play calling is very suspect. What the hell was up with that "wildcat" that we ran with Pick last game twice in a row? are you kidding me? And you guys think this guy is some kind of offensive genius? give me a break.

Jamil,

Danny Manning has done his job and done it well. Warriner has not done his job very well. I dont care about the numbers against bad teams I care about the numbers against good teams because thats where we want to be. No I would never get rid of Danny, I think Danny is going to leave us sooner or later.

Jayhawkjoe,

Me personally, Im not willing to give Bowen another season because I think his defense is crap. I want aggressiveness on the defense and Im not seeing it at all. Obviously OU is not a push over defense but it's not like UT is an awesome offense. Have you watched them lately? McCoy has not been that great this season.

And how about our numbers against a not so good defense in CU...Yes we threw the ball well in that game but we ran for -8 yards against one of the worst run defenses in the country. But you're right Warriner is a genius.

waywardJay (anonymous) says...

Ok..... we agree the play calling is questionable and that Our Defensive coordinator is not doing the job.....

Warriner is responsible for the development of Meier and Briscoe.... i get that.... however, He's also responsible for how they are used..... and im not seeing enough out of Briscoe on a day to day performance... We get ! going and the other disappears..... withthe excpetion of the Iowa State game .... we have not had BOTH Going in the same game this season... that falls on Reesing and that falls on Warrinner.....

Bowen's clearly not getting it done...... we have kids burning their red-shirts instead of starting the season playing for aour defense.... and that's gotta stop... eithe rhe's not evaluating the players well in the onset well... or he has too much faith in his personnel's capabilities...... This is a tendenacy, we stuck with slow motored players at Linebacker last year and lost games because our "best" linebackers weren't fast enough , even if they were good players.....

Our Line is not consistantly getting pressure, and most of it's seeing single teams .... Our "best" linebackers this year appear to be Thurp and Thurp... which is bad because there's only 1......and he started off the year on the bench.... our defensive backfield has been in flux since opening night..... and it's not fixed...... now we talk about playing macdougald both ways ???? This is horrible coaching.... it's completely reactive, and reactive is incredibly passive..... You are ok to be reactive on Defense IF you have a strong offense capable of erasing mistakes on any given play or when you have dominant enough players that will dictate the play to a certain extent..... If Onyegbule was getting to the Quarterback consistantly and hitting him game in and game out.... we could afford to sit a bit more in zone... but with no line penetration we give up too much time and too high completion percentage.... There really is no fixing this, not this season... we pretty much are who we are.... which means we should blitz more, just to try and get SOME fear in the quarterbacks head...... even if it means we get burned..... if our D line can't get to him.. and We are not doing blitzing, we aren't getting any closer to better..... This is why Bowen's gotta go.

With this logic, UT should fire their OC. Might as well bench McCoy as well. They suck. With all that talent, and they're only ranked 3rd. What a waste. Surely another coach would have them ranked #1. They haven't lost yet, but they suck.

Give me a break suttonku. It's a hell of a lot easier to write a blog than to coach college athletes in a premier conference. Give it a rest and enjoy the season. It's entertainment...not brain surgery. Support your team. Now is not the time to call for firings. KU is still trying to bridge the talent gap. When KU is at the same talent-level of OU and UT, then you will have a gripe. Until then, enjoy it for what it is, entertainment.

It does upset me that our defensive backs are not more aggressive. You can't look for an interception every play but it would be nice if we would do it a few times a game. Let's not forget that we won an Orange Bowl two years ago with most of the same pieces. Ed Warriner is the primary reason that our team has been as good as we've been. Maybe we need to reassess our overall offensive strategy and attack the defense like we did in '07, but we've got all the right pieces and all the right plays. It's hard to diagnose what our problem is defensively. I believe that Coach Bowen can do the job, but we're not getting the results we have expected. I think that Bowen gets another year to develop his players, and we can see what he does with all these young guys after they've been battle tested and had an offseason to improve.

Meier ranks 2nd in the nation in receptions. First in the Big 12.

Terrible production indeed. Fire the offensive coordinator. It's all his fault.

Seriously. Do you understand the impact that talent has on a team? Especially talent at the offensive line? Kansas is not quite there yet--especially at that position. Do you think Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, USC are good because they have the best coaches in the nation? No. They're good because they have the most talent year in and year out.

No I agree with you that the talent level isnt quite there yet but especially on defense they have more talent than what theyre showing. Look, I guess I would more so like to see Bowen gone but Briscoe's ranking is good but we all know he can do better and he has dropped some key passes this season, like the one last weekend that would have been a sure touchdown.

I think Meier is great and I like him as a WR. I like Briscoe as well but I think he has to get better at catching the ball because he does have some drops this year that are inexcusable. I will ask again, where has Wilson been all season?

"I like Briscoe as well but I think he has to get better at catching the ball because he does have some drops this year that are inexcusable."

I certainly don't have a photographic memory, but the only drops I specifically remember are the one at the end of the Colorado game -- which followed some amazing grabs on that last possession to put us in position to score -- and the slant during the OU game. The previous, had he caught it, would have been an remarkable catch and a possible ESPN top play. The latter was definitely a catchable ball, but not an easy one (it had been tipped if I'm not mistaken). Certainly neither would I categorize as "inexcusable." As to other "dropped" passes... [insert crickets]....

Briscoe is 3rd in the nation in Yards per Game (1st in Big 12). I'm not sure how underachieving that really is. One might note that your grading curve for wide receivers rests comfortably on insane.

jayhawkboogeyman (anonymous) says...

The defense has played more than well enough to win the last 3 games.
The offense, on the other hand, has scored something like -49 points the same 3 games.
Today at TTU, our defense scored 14 and gave up 14. Our offense scored 7 and gave up 28.
And we are supposed to be sooooo good on offense?
The offensive strategy is idiotic. Jake Sharp cannot run up the middle. Todd Reesing is too little to throw check-down passes in the pocket. The option is guaranteed to lose yards more often than gain yards (for every 1 time a game we gain yards, we give ourselves 2nd and 13 about 7). The quick screen to the WR on the outside is an easy pick 6 for any good defense, and when it's not picked, it loses 4 yards most of the time.
And we piddle-putt around on offense way too much this year. Like we are scared to let our defense back on the field. If we don't get in formation and mull around like fools for 24 seconds every play so the opposing defense can adjust for our set, then the defense won't be able to make a stop. In the last couple years, we would get in a rhythm early by playing hurry up all the time. This year we supposedly have all this depth and talent but we lurch around like idiots right up to the snap.
And Mangino doesn't get his kids up for the game. Our defense has played well, but we never make huge hits or get really excited about a stop. Our reaction is like we are trying to make a 3 foot putt to save par when we get a big sack.
And the football team is a real embarrassment to our school when we spend tons of money on our "History Awaits" advertising and claim to be an "elite program" on the loudspeaker at home games while losing miserably to OU, and then MM had a make a fool of himself and Todd by running his mouth about the Heisman when it was clear to everyone this team was going to lose several games.
I want to wait til the end of the year before I say who should go and who should stay, but I will say for certain that the coaching has cost us games the last 3 weeks as much as the players have. Most of our problems on this team I attribute to coaching, and that goes straight to Mangino.
I like Mangino as much as anyone on here. I sometimes walk my puppy by his office in the evening, and when he out on the balcony, he is always really nice. We have the same kind of dog. But I am not afraid to say he has not been that great.
I am tired of the excuse about "look how bad our team was 10 years ago. He has done a lot."
So what? He is proving that he can consistently be a 7-5 coach and lose badly every time to the top teams in the league. I don't care how many years we would have been happy with 7-5, the fact is we have put the money and energy into making this team 10-2 consistently and our coach is not of that caliber.
